Texas dove outfitters: find a hunt

50 dove outfitters, lodges and guide services across six regions of Texas — what they charge, whether they have beds, how long the hunt runs and what the field setup actually looks like. Reviewed August 3, 2026 for the 2026-27 season.

The short answer

A hosted Texas dove hunt costs roughly $100–$200 per gun for a half-day or afternoon field, $700–$1,300 for a two- or three-day package with lodging and meals, and $795 and up at a full-service wingshooting resort. Opening-weekend fields book out by spring. You still need your own license, endorsement and HIP certification.

Booking

How to pick a dove outfitter

Six questions that separate a great field from an expensive afternoon of watching empty sky.

Ask what the field is planted in

Sunflower, milo, sesame and cut wheat pull birds. A pasture with a stock tank can be great late in the day and dead at noon. A confident outfitter will tell you exactly what's in the ground and when it was cut.

Guided or hosted?

Most Texas dove hunts are hosted: they put you on a field and leave. Guided means someone scouts, places you and often runs a dog. Prices below $175 are almost always hosted — that's fine, just know it going in.

Hunters per field

Ask how many guns go on the field you're paying for. Ten to fifteen on a big sunflower field is normal and safe. Twenty-five is a shooting gallery and the birds will flare off it by day two.

Bird cleaning and ice

Confirm whether cleaning is included, charged per bird, or on you. In 95-degree heat you need ice within the hour, so bring a cooler even when the answer is yes.

Deposits and weather

Half down is standard for lodge packages, and dove deposits are usually non-refundable. Ask what happens if a cold front or a hurricane shuts the weekend down — a good outfit will move you to another date.

Tipping

$50–$100 per gun, per day for a guide, plus something for the cleaners and the kitchen on a package hunt. Cash, at the end.

Packing

What to bring on a guided hunt

Outfitters supply the field. Everything that keeps you shooting straight and cool in September heat is on you — these are our top-rated picks in the six categories that matter most on a booked hunt.

FAQ

Booking a Texas dove hunt: FAQ

The questions hunters ask before they wire a deposit.

How much does a guided dove hunt in Texas cost?

Day hunts on a hosted field typically run $100 to $200 per gun, with opening weekend priced at the top of that range. Guided hunts with meals and lodging run $700 to $1,300 for a two- or three-day package, and full-service wingshooting resorts start near $795 per gun for a half-day.

Do I still need a Texas hunting license if I book an outfitter?

Yes. Every hunter needs a Texas hunting license, a Migratory Game Bird Endorsement and HIP certification, no matter whose field you are standing in. Outfitters do not supply them, though most will point you to a license vendor in town.

When should I book a Texas dove hunt?

Opening weekend on the good whitewing and sunflower fields sells out in spring. Book September 1 dates by March or April. Late-September and second-segment dates are far easier to get and often $25 to $50 cheaper per gun.

Which part of Texas has the best dove hunting?

South Texas and the Rio Grande Valley hold the largest white-winged dove concentrations, the Coastal Prairie offers big mourning dove flights close to Houston, and the Panhandle produces the best North Zone opener. Central Texas around Hondo and D'Hanis is the classic all-round dove weekend.

Is bird cleaning included?

Often, but never assume. Many hosted operations clean and package birds for free or for around $1 per bird. Ask before you book, and bring a cooler with ice either way.

Should I tip a dove guide?

Yes, if you are guided. $50 to $100 per gun, per day is customary for a guide, plus something for the bird cleaners and lodge kitchen staff on a package hunt.
